1. How to Spread Bet on Alcoa shares?

- You believe that the Alcoa shares should go up
- Therefore, you choose to ‘buy’ the market at $14.70 and risk £2 per cent
- The share price increases and so the market changes to $15.29 - $15.32
- With this new price you might decide to guarantee a profit and close your bet by selling at $15.29
- You initially bought the spread at $14.70
- Profit / Loss = (Final Level - Initial Level) x stake
- Profit / Loss = ($15.29 - $14.70) x £2 per cent
- Profit / Loss = $0.59 x £2 per cent
- Profit / Loss = 59¢ x £2 per cent
- Profit / Loss = £118 profit
However, if the trade didn’t work as forecast, and had the Alcoa shares decreased in value, with the spread moving down to $14.15 - $14.18, then you could decide to close your position and prevent any further losses. To do this you would sell at $14.15.
- Buy price: $14.70
- Profit / Loss = (Final Level - Initial Level) x stake
- Profit / Loss = ($14.15 - $14.70) x £2 per cent
- Profit / Loss = -$0.55 x £2 per cent
- Profit / Loss = -55¢ x £2 per cent
- Profit / Loss = -£110 loss
