How Do I Spread Bet on American Shares?
Currently, the price of the Exxon Mobil Rolling Daily market is $83.68 - $83.80 with firms such as Tradefair.
As with most large cap equities listed on the leading stock exchanges like the LSE and the NYSE, investors can spread bet on the Exxon Mobil shares to go up or go down in value. With this Exxon Mobil Rolling Daily market, an investor can place a spread bet on:
a) Exxon Mobil shares to move higher than $83.80, or
b) Exxon Mobil shares to move lower than $83.68.
With the Exxon Mobil market you trade in £X per cent, where a cent is 1¢ of Exxon Mobil share price movement. As a quick example, if you had a stake of £4 per cent and the Exxon Mobil share price moved 5¢ then that would be a difference to your profits (or losses) of £20.
Exxon Mobil Shares Trading Example
Considering an example, let’s say you see the live price on an online spread betting website and it gives a spread of $83.68 - $83.80. Following your market analysis, you might come to think that the Exxon Mobil share price will increase and move higher than $83.80. This would mean:
- You think the Exxon Mobil shares should go up
- Therefore, you decide you are going to ‘buy’ the market at $83.80 and you risk £2 per cent
- The price of the shares increases and so the spread moves to $84.47 - $84.59
- With this new spread you could decide to take your profit and settle your bet. To do this you would sell at $84.47
- You bought the spread at $83.80
- P&L = (Closing Level - Opening Level) x stake
- P&L = ($84.47 - $83.80) x £2 per cent stake
- P&L = $0.67 x £2 per cent stake
- P&L = 67¢ x £2 per cent stake
- P&L = £134 profit
Spread bets don’t always go to plan. If the market failed to move as planned, and had the Exxon Mobil shares decreased in price, with the market decreasing to $83.17 - $83.29, then you might choose to settle your position and cut your losses. In order to do this you would sell at $83.17.
- Initial buy price = $83.80
- P&L = (Closing Level - Opening Level) x stake
- P&L = ($83.17 - $83.80) x £2 per cent stake
- P&L = -$0.63 x £2 per cent stake
- P&L = -63¢ x £2 per cent stake
- P&L = -£126 loss
