1. How to Spread Bet on IBM shares?
Currently, the price of the IBM Rolling Daily market is $128.39 - $128.57 with Tradefair.
Like most large cap shares listed on the leading exchanges like the New York Stock Exchange, investors can bet on the IBM shares to go up or down in value. With this IBM Rolling Daily market, you can speculate on:
a) IBM shares to rise above $128.57, or
b) IBM shares to fall below $128.39.
It should be noted that with the IBM market you trade in £X per cent, where a cent is 1¢ of IBM share movement. As a quick example, if you had a stake of £2 per cent and the IBM stock moved 4¢ then you would see a change to your bottom line of £8.
IBM Equities Spread Betting Example
Considering an example, let’s assume you see the real time price on a spread betting website that gives the current spread of $128.39 - $128.57. After your analysis, you may think that the IBM shares will increase and go higher than $128.57. As a result:
- You think the IBM share price will increase
- You decide you are going to go long of the market at $128.57 and risk £1 per cent
- The price of the shares rises and so the market changes to $129.86 - $130.04
- With the new spread you can choose to guarantee a profit and close your bet. You would do this by selling at $129.86
- You initially bought the market at $128.57
- Profit / Loss = (Final Price - Initial Price) x stake
- Profit / Loss = ($129.86 - $128.57) x £1 per cent stake
- Profit / Loss = $1.29 x £1 per cent stake
- Profit / Loss = 129¢ x £1 per cent stake
- Profit / Loss = £129 profit
Spread trading does not always go to plan. If the market failed to move as forecast, and had the IBM stock decreased in price, with the market dropping to $127.35 - $127.53, then you could choose to close your position and prevent further losses. To do this you would sell at $127.35.
- You bought the spread at $128.57
- Profit / Loss = (Final Price - Initial Price) x stake
- Profit / Loss = ($127.35 - $128.57) x £1 per cent stake
- Profit / Loss = -$1.22 x £1 per cent stake
- Profit / Loss = -122¢ x £1 per cent stake
- Profit / Loss = -£122 loss
