1. How to Spread Bet on Merck and Co shares?
The current spread betting price of the Merck & Co Rolling Daily market is $37.97 - $38.02 with firms such as Tradefair.
As with most large cap equities listed on the leading stock exchanges, investors can spread bet on the Merck & Co shares to rise or fall in value. With the Merck & Co Rolling Daily market, an investor can speculate on:
a) Merck & Co shares to increase above $38.02, or
b) Merck & Co shares to decrease below $37.97.
Note that with the Merck & Co market you trade in £X per cent, where a cent is 1¢ of Merck & Co share movement. As a quick example, if you had a stake of £4 per cent and the Merck & Co stock moves 4¢ then your P&L would change by £16.
Merck & Co Shares Spread Trading Example
As an example, let’s assume you see the live price on a spread betting website that gives the spread of $37.97 - $38.02. So, having done your market analysis, you may feel that the Merck & Co share price will go higher than $38.02. Therefore:
- You think that the Merck & Co shares should increase
- Therefore, you choose to go long of the market at $38.02 and you risk £2 per cent
- The share price increases and so the spread moves to $38.65 - $38.70
- With the new price you could choose to take your profit and close your position. To do this you would sell at $38.65
- You bought the market at $38.02
- Profit = (Closing Level - Opening Level) x stake
- Profit = ($38.65 - $38.02) x £2 per cent stake
- Profit = $0.63 x £2 per cent stake
- Profit = 63¢ x £2 per cent stake
- Profit = £126 profit
Investing does not always go to plan. If the trade did not move as predicted, and had the Merck & Co stock decreased in price, with the market decreasing to $37.35 - $37.40, then you might choose to settle your bet and prevent any further losses. You would do this by selling at $37.35.
- Initial price you bought the market at: $38.02
- Loss = (Closing Level - Opening Level) x stake
- Loss = ($37.35 - $38.02) x £2 per cent stake
- Loss = -$0.67 x £2 per cent stake
- Loss = -67¢ x £2 per cent stake
- Loss = -£134 loss
