How Do I Spread Bet on UK Shares?
Looking at the equities markets, the current price of the Royal Dutch Shell (A) Rolling Daily market is 2170.0p - 2173.2p with spread trading firms like Capitalspreads.
Like many equities listed on the leading stock exchanges, an investor can bet on the Royal Dutch Shell shares either increasing or decreasing in value. With this Royal Dutch Shell (A) Rolling Daily market, you can spread bet on:
a) Royal Dutch Shell shares to increase above 2173.2p, or
b) Royal Dutch Shell shares to decrease below 2170.0p.
With the Royal Dutch Shell market you trade in £X per penny, where a penny is 1p of Royal Dutch Shell share price movement. As an example, if your stake was £10 per penny and the Royal Dutch Shell shares move 5p then your bottom line would alter by £50.
Royal Dutch Shell Shares Spread Betting Example
Considering an example, let’s say you see the live price on an online spread betting website that gives the spread of 2170.0p - 2173.2p. After suitable analysis, you might feel that the Royal Dutch Shell shares will increase and move above 2173.2p. This implies:
- You believe that the Royal Dutch Shell share price will go up
- You choose to go long of the market at 2173.2p and you bet £5 per penny
- The market rises with the market moving to 2200.4p - 2203.6p
- Therefore, you may choose to take a profit and close your position by selling at 2200.4p
- Initial price you bought the market at: 2173.2p
- P&L = (Settlement Price - Initial Price) x stake
- P&L = (2200.4p - 2173.2p) x £5 per penny
- P&L = 27.2p x £5 per penny
- P&L = £136.00 profit
Nevertheless, if the market failed to move as planned, and had the Royal Dutch Shell stock decreased in price, with the spread going down to 2143.9p - 2147.1p, then you can choose to settle your position and restrict your loss. To do this you would sell at 2143.9p.
- You bought the spread bet at 2173.2p
- P&L = (Settlement Price - Initial Price) x stake
- P&L = (2143.9p - 2173.2p) x £5 per penny
- P&L = -29.3p x £5 per penny
- P&L = -£146.50 loss
