These are very depressing figures, but unfortunately they’re going to get worse before they get better.
We’ve already seen this week that we’re careering towards deflation and it’s very difficult for an economy to recover from that – just look at Japan. I hope I’m wrong, but I find it hard to believe the 3 million mark won’t be hit before the end of the year.

This is the correct decision and it is vital for the BOE to try to measure the effectiveness of the quantitative easing policy.
It does seem to have helped since its launch, but we shouldn’t just start printing more and more money without thorough analysis.

This fall in output is a huge disappointment after the encouragement brought about by April’s figures.
It seems the clutches of recession are tighter than previously thought and it will take more than a single month of positive data to demonstrate that we are on the right side of the economy’s trough.

Those who are very disappointed by this news are clearly clutching at green shoots.
April’s retail figures were strong thanks to the Easter holiday and some welcome balmy weather. But it would be naive to think that the high street is now on the road to recovery. The recent heatwave will have helped slightly, but consistent growth is the name of the game.

After months of doom and gloom, everyone is jumping on the ‘we’ve hit the bottom’ bandwagon.
Quantitative easing seems to have had a major effect, but it’s interesting that the Governor is being much more cautious with his forecasts than others. Now is not the time to be complacent. There are positive signs, but that’s all they are at the moment.

The high street will feel the effects of this recession for a long time to come and it has to do all it can to get customers through the door.

The recent market gains could be a sign that the rate cuts and quantitative easing are beginning to work, but it would be foolish to think the economy is even remotely out of the woods.
The BoE won’t start moving rates until we see an improvement in fundamental numbers like unemployment, house prices, inflation and borrowing.
