FTSE 100 Moves Slightly Higher

A quick commet on the spread betting markets, supplied and sponsored by Spreadex.
Spread Betting Comment - 14 August 09 - 8:20am
A pretty quiet start to the trading day with little in terms of corporate news to move the markets and so the FTSE is currently trading small up although bid speculation around British Land is pushing up the real estate sector.
I would expect the UK market to trade pretty sideways on light volume and low news but we may see an impact from the CPI and Michigan figures coming out of the US later on this afternoon.

The Dow finished up 36 pts last night to close at 9398, the highest closing price in 9 months. If there was any proof needed the bulls are still in control it was yesterday after the dismal retail sales figures came in over half a percent below expectations, yet the market still finished at new highs. Strangely on the same day Wal-Mart’s figures were better than expected which alleviated some of the retail gloom.
Today is quite heavy for news and the focus of traders will be on the CPI figures and Michigan sentiment. The test for today is whether the market can hold onto these gains and close the week at new highs.

Going against the larger than expected decline in US consumer confidence, it seems the population on this side of the Atlantic is more convinced by green shoot optimism.
But after poor recent GDP and trade reports, it seems that no recovery can happen until confidence in the economy is vastly improved. This could be the first step onwards and out of recession, however small it may be.

Following on from last week’s disappointing GDP figures, today’s results are a further blow to the green shoot advocators.
Some analyst’s forecasts for an early recovery seem to be optimistic and this may prompt the government to seriously consider extending the current cut in VAT beyond the New Year.

Although these figures are slightly disappointing, the economy’s rate of contraction is nevertheless easing and the British recession appears to be on the wane.
However, the figures are by no means conclusive. Consumer and business confidence remains low and this is certain to impact on any possible economic growth and recovery.
