1. How to Spread Bet on the Hang Seng?
Currently, the price of the Hang Seng (Hong Kong) (January) market is 22213 - 22253 with spread betting companies like Financial Spreads.
Like most major stock market indices, you can place a spread bet on the Hang Seng to go up or down. With this Hang Seng (Hong Kong) (January) market, an investor can speculate on:
a) The Hang Seng to go above 22253, or
b) The Hang Seng to go below 22213.
Note that with the Hang Seng market you trade in £X per point, where a point is 1 point of Hang Seng movement. As an example, if you were to invest £2 per point and the Hang Seng index moves 4 points then that would be a difference to your profits (or losses) of £8.
Hang Seng Index Spread Trading Example
Considering an example, let’s assume you see the real time price on an online spread betting website that shows the current spread of 22213 - 22253. Having done your market analysis, you could think that the Hang Seng will increase and move above 22253. This means:
- You think the Hang Seng will increase
- As a result, you decide you want to ‘buy’ the market at 22253 and you risk £1 per point
- The market increases with the spread moving to 22398 - 22438
- With the new price you might decide to take a profit and close your position. To do this you would sell at 22398
- Initial price you bought the market at: 22253
- Profit/Loss = (Final Price - Initial Price) x stake
- Profit/Loss = (22398 - 22253) x £1 per point stake
- Profit/Loss = 145 x £1 per point stake
- Profit/Loss = £145 profit
Investing does not always go to plan. If the trade did not move as planned, and had the Hang Seng decreased in price, with the spread moving down to 22119 - 22159, then you may choose to settle your position and restrict your loss by selling at 22119.
- You initially bought the spread at 22253
- Profit/Loss = (Final Price - Initial Price) x stake
- Profit/Loss = (22119 - 22253) x £1 per point stake
- Profit/Loss = -134 x £1 per point stake
- Profit/Loss = -£134 loss
Please note that the Hang Seng (Hong Kong) (January) market is a futures market. If the spread bet is not closed beforehand then it will close on the expiry date. For this January market, the expiry date is 28-Jan-10. Your profits (or losses) will then be calculated as above, i.e Profit/Loss = (Final Price - Initial Price) x stake.
