Spread Betting Strategies

It is normal for investors to have their own trading strategies and theories. Here are a few of the more common spread betting tips:
- Put a trading plan together before you start. I tend to include the markets I am going trade, how much I am prepared to lose and the level of return (profit) I am looking for.
- You should stick to the markets you know. If you know little about the US Stock Market but have a good understanding of the UK Stock Market then you are probably better off trading the FTSE 100 Index and leaving the Dow Jones. It is surprising how many investors ignore this rule and want to ‘have a go' at another market.
- Greed can be your worst enemy. It can be tempting to trade lots of positions. I tend to trade 0–5 markets at any one time. How anyone trades 20 positions at the same time is beyond me. If those markets start to move against you then how are you going to make rational decisions?
- Control your emotions. Emotions can get in the way of the trading, especially after you lose a trade. Using orders like Stop Losses and Limit Orders can help control trading decisions. Having a plan and sticking to it will naturally help. And remember that ‘chasing losses' or ‘revenge trading', ie trading after you have just lost in order to recoup your investment, will often result in two losing trades.
- It is often worth having a look at a practice or demo account. These are free accounts with virtual funds. If you are new to spread betting or want to test your theories on specific markets then a little practice should help you understand the risks and rewards.
- Controlling your risk is important. Write down how much you are prepared to risk and set Stop Losses to help keep your trades within these limits.
