IAG Spread Betting Example

IAG Spread Bets
If you’re interested in spread betting on shares such as IAG then, on visiting a trading platform like InterTrader, you might find a quote of 316.44p – 316.86p.

Therefore, you can speculate on IAG to go above 316.86p or go below 316.44p.

When you spread bet, you trade on every unit the market rises or falls; for the IAG market a unit is 1p of the UK share’s price movement.

Let’s say you decide to trade £10 for every penny IAG rises or falls.

Buying – Spread Betting on the Market to Rise

If you went long of IAG at 316.86p and the UK shares rose then the quote might be re-priced at 327.95p – 328.37p. If this were the case, you might choose to close your position for a profit by selling at 327.95p.

Profits (or Losses) = (final price of the market – initial price of the market) x stake per penny
Profits (or Losses) = (327.95p – 316.86p) x £10 per penny stake
Profits (or Losses) = 11.09p x £10 per penny
Profits (or Losses) = £110.90 profit

Of course, if the UK shares had fallen to 304.19p – 304.61p, you may want to close your bet to restrict your losses. If that were to happen, you would sell back at 304.19p.

You would close your bet with the same £10 per penny stake:

Profits (or Losses) = (final price of the market – initial price of the market) x stake per penny
Profits (or Losses) = (304.19p – 316.86p) x £10 per penny stake
Profits (or Losses) = -12.67p x £10 per penny
Profits (or Losses) = -£126.70 loss

Selling – Spread Betting on the Market to Fall

One of the many features of spread trading is that you can sell the markets, i.e. bet that the markets will go down.

This market was originally priced at 316.44p – 316.86p.

If you sold IAG at 316.44p and the UK shares decreased then you might see the quote drop to 303.28p – 303.70p. Assuming this was the case, you could close your trade by buying at 303.70p.

Profits (or Losses) = (initial price of the market – final price of the market) x stake per penny
Profits (or Losses) = (316.44p – 303.70p) x £10 per penny stake
Profits (or Losses) = 12.74p x £10 per penny
Profits (or Losses) = £127.40 profit

The markets can of course rise, if the UK shares had moved up to 330.58p – 331.00p, you could close your bet to prevent further losses. In that case, you would buy at 331.00p.

Therefore, with the same £10 per penny stake:

Profits (or Losses) = (initial price of the market – final price of the market) x stake per penny
Profits (or Losses) = (316.44p – 331.00p) x £10 per penny stake
Profits (or Losses) = -14.56p x £10 per penny
Profits (or Losses) = -£145.60 loss
