Where Can I Spread Bet on the Dow Jones?

You can put spread bets on the Dow Jones and numerous other financial markets with any of the following spread trading firms.

Along with the FTSE and DAX, the Dow Jones (aka Wall Street) is one of the most popular index markets.

Dow Jones Spread Betting - Example Chart

Dow Jones Spread Betting Example

Dow Jones Spread Betting
If you are thinking about financial spread betting on an index like the Dow Jones then, on visiting a trading platform like InterTrader.com, you might see a price of 17063.5 – 17065.5.

As a result, you could speculate on the Dow Jones to move higher than 17065.5 or to move lower than 17063.5.

When placing a spread bet, investors speculate on every unit the market moves up or down. With the Dow Jones market a unit is 1 point of the stock market index’s price movement.

For example, let’s say you decide to stake £2 for every point the Dow Jones moves up or down.

Speculating on the Market to Increase

If you were to buy the Dow Jones at 17065.5 and the stock market index rose then the spread could move to 17142.3 – 17144.3. If that were to happen, you might decide to close your trade for a profit by selling at 17142.3.

Profit/Loss = (settlement level of the market – opening level of the market) x stake per point
Profit/Loss = (17142.3 – 17065.5) x £2 per point stake
Profit/Loss = 76.8 points x £2 per point
Profit/Loss = £153.60 profit

However, if the stock market index were to fall down to, for example, 16980.2 – 16982.2, you may decide to close your position to restrict your losses. If that happened, you would sell the market at 16980.2.

You would close your bet with the same £2 per point stake:

Profit/Loss = (settlement level of the market – opening level of the market) x stake per point
Profit/Loss = (16980.2 – 17065.5) x £2 per point stake
Profit/Loss = -85.3 points x £2 per point
Profit/Loss = -£170.60 loss

Speculating on the Market to Decrease

A major advantage of financial spread betting is that you can sell the markets, i.e. bet that the markets are going to decrease.

If you recall, initially the market was 17063.5 – 17065.5.

If you went short of the Dow Jones at 17063.5 and the stock market index fell then the quote could become 16996.2 – 16998.2. If this were the case, you might want to close your trade for a profit at 16998.2.

Profit/Loss = (opening level of the market – settlement level of the market) x stake per point
Profit/Loss = (17063.5 – 16998.2) x £2 per point stake
Profit/Loss = 65.3 points x £2 per point
Profit/Loss = £130.60 profit

Of course, if the stock market index were to rise to, for example, 17134.0 – 17136.0, you could choose to close your bet to prevent further losses. In that case, you’d buy at 17136.0.

You would do this with the same £2 per point stake:

Profit/Loss = (opening level of the market – settlement level of the market) x stake per point
Profit/Loss = (17063.5 – 17136.0) x £2 per point stake
Profit/Loss = -72.5 points x £2 per point
Profit/Loss = -£145.00 loss
