Remember – spread betting is high risk, your losses can exceed your deposits.
The quick chart above provides a valuable look at the latest movements.
However, for those investors that are spread trading EURAUD, the companies listed above offer real-time prices and charts with more advanced options.
Example chart from FinancialSpreads.com:
If you are going to spread bet on an FX rate such as EURAUD then, looking at a company like IG, at the time of writing you would find a quote of AU$1.42943 – AU$1.42983.
This means you could speculate on EURAUD to move higher than AU$1.42983 or to move lower than AU$1.42943.
When placing a spread bet, you trade on every unit the market rises or falls; in the case of the EURAUD market a unit is AU$0.00010 of the forex pair’s price movement.
So let’s say you want to bet £3 for every AU$0.00010 EURAUD moves up or down.
Buying – Speculating on the Market to Rise
If you were to go long of EURAUD at AU$1.42983 and the forex pair rose then the quote might be re-priced at AU$1.43340 – AU$1.43380. Assuming this was the case, you might decide to close your bet for a profit by selling at AU$1.43340.Your P&L = (final level of the market – initial level of the market) x stake per AU$0.00010
Your P&L = (AU$1.43340 – AU$1.42983) x £3 per AU$0.00010 stake
Your P&L = AU$0.00357 x £3 per AU$0.00010
Your P&L = £107.10 profit
Markets can also fall, if the forex pair had moved down to, for example, AU$1.42661 – AU$1.42701, you might want to close your trade to restrict your losses. If that happened, you’d make a sell trade at AU$1.42661.
With the same £3 per AU$0.00010 stake:
Your P&L = (final level of the market – initial level of the market) x stake per AU$0.00010
Your P&L = (AU$1.42661 – AU$1.42983) x £3 per AU$0.00010 stake
Your P&L = -AU$0.00322 x £3 per AU$0.00010
Your P&L = -£96.60 loss
Selling – Speculating on the Market to Fall
A key benefit of financial spread betting is that investors can sell the markets, i.e. speculate that the markets are going to go down.Initially, the market was priced at AU$1.42943 – AU$1.42983.
If you were to sell EURAUD at AU$1.42943 and the forex pair went down then you might see the price move to AU$1.42474 – AU$1.42514. If that were to happen, you might want to close your position for a profit at AU$1.42514.
Your P&L = (initial level of the market – final level of the market) x stake per AU$0.00010
Your P&L = (AU$1.42943 – AU$1.42514) x £3 per AU$0.00010 stake
Your P&L = AU$0.00429 x £3 per AU$0.00010
Your P&L = £128.70 profit
Of course, if the forex pair had risen to AU$1.43289 – AU$1.43329, you could choose to close your trade to prevent further losses. In that case, you’d buy at AU$1.43329.
You would close your bet with the same £3 per AU$0.00010 stake:
Your P&L = (initial level of the market – final level of the market) x stake per AU$0.00010
Your P&L = (AU$1.42943 – AU$1.43329) x £3 per AU$0.00010 stake
Your P&L = -AU$0.00386 x £3 per AU$0.00010
Your P&L = -£115.80 loss
