Euro Stoxx Spread Betting - Example Chart

Euro Stoxx Spread Betting Example

Euro Stoxx Spread Betting
Should you want to spread bet on an index such as the Euro Stoxx then, on visiting a platform like IG, at the moment you’d get a price of 3198 – 3201.

Therefore, you can speculate on the Euro Stoxx to go above 3201 or go below 3198.

When spread betting, investors speculate on every unit the market rises or falls. With the Euro Stoxx market a unit is 1 point of the stock index’s price movement.

With this example, let’s say you want to stake £4 for every point the Euro Stoxx rises or falls.

Spread Betting on the Market to Go Up

If you bought the Euro Stoxx at 3201 and the stock index rose then the quote might be re-priced at 3230 – 3233. If this were the case, you might choose to close your bet for a profit at 3230.

Your P&L = (settlement level of the market – initial level of the market) x stake per point
Your P&L = (3230 – 3201) x £4 per point stake
Your P&L = 29 points x £4 per point
Your P&L = £116 profit

Financial markets also move down, if the stock index were to fall to 3175 – 3178, you might want to close your bet to prevent further losses. If that were to happen, you’d sell at 3175.

You would do this with the same £4 per point stake:

Your P&L = (settlement level of the market – initial level of the market) x stake per point
Your P&L = (3175 – 3201) x £4 per point stake
Your P&L = -26 points x £4 per point
Your P&L = -£104 loss

Spread Betting on the Market to Go Down

A useful benefit of placing a spread bet is that you can short sell the markets, i.e. speculate on the markets to fall.

Initially, the market was priced at 3198 – 3201.

If you went short of the Euro Stoxx at 3198 and the stock index fell then you might see the quote drop to 3171 – 3174. In that case, you might want to close your position for a profit by buying at 3174.

Your P&L = (initial level of the market – settlement level of the market) x stake per point
Your P&L = (3198 – 3174) x £4 per point stake
Your P&L = 24 points x £4 per point
Your P&L = £96 profit

Of course, if the stock index were to rise to 3217 – 3220, you may want to close your bet to limit your losses. Therefore, you’d buy the market at 3220.

Therefore, with the same £4 per point stake:

Your P&L = (initial level of the market – settlement level of the market) x stake per point
Your P&L = (3198 – 3220) x £4 per point stake
Your P&L = -22 points x £4 per point
Your P&L = -£88 loss

Euro Stoxx (December) spread betting market quoted as of 24-Feb-17.

One thing to note is that this is a futures spread bet and therefore there is a predetermined expiry date when it’s set to close automatically.
