Hong Kong Hang Seng Spread Betting - Example Chart

Hang Seng Spread Betting Example

Hong Kong Hang Seng Spread Betting
If you are interested in financial spread betting on an index such as the Hang Seng then, looking at a company like IG, you may see a quote of 24236 – 24256.

Therefore, you could bet on the Hang Seng to move higher than 24256 or to move lower than 24236.

With spread betting, investors trade on every unit the market increases or decreases. For the Hang Seng market a unit is 1 point of the stock market index’s price movement.

Let’s say, for this instance, you decide to stake £1 for every point the Hang Seng increases or decreases.

Spread Betting on the Market to Increase

If you were to buy the Hang Seng at 24256 and the stock market index rose then the quote might change to 24426 – 24446. In that case, you might decide to close your position by selling at 24426.

Profit/Loss = (final price of the market – initial price of the market) x stake per point
Profit/Loss = (24426 – 24256) x £1 per point stake
Profit/Loss = 170 points x £1 per point
Profit/Loss = £170 profit

Of course, if the stock market index had fallen to 24074 – 24094, you might want to close your position to restrict your losses. If that were to happen, you’d place a sell trade at 24074.

Therefore, with the same £1 per point stake:

Profit/Loss = (final price of the market – initial price of the market) x stake per point
Profit/Loss = (24074 – 24256) x £1 per point stake
Profit/Loss = -182 points x £1 per point
Profit/Loss = -£182 loss

Spread Betting on the Market to Decrease

One of the benefits of financial spread betting is that you can short sell the markets, i.e. bet that the markets are going to drop.

If you recall, initially the price was 24236 – 24256.

If you short sold the Hang Seng at 24236 and the stock market index fell then the quote could change to 24072 – 24092. If this were the case, you might decide to close your position at 24092.

Profit/Loss = (initial price of the market – final price of the market) x stake per point
Profit/Loss = (24236 – 24092) x £1 per point stake
Profit/Loss = 144 points x £1 per point
Profit/Loss = £144 profit

The markets can of course rise, if the stock market index increased to 24371 – 24391, you might decide to close your trade to prevent further losses. Assuming this was the case, you would buy the market at 24391.

With the same £1 per point stake:

Profit/Loss = (initial price of the market – final price of the market) x stake per point
Profit/Loss = (24236 – 24391) x £1 per point stake
Profit/Loss = -155 points x £1 per point
Profit/Loss = -£155 loss
