NZD vs USD Spread Bets - Example Chart

NZDUSD Spread Betting Example

NZD vs USD Spread Bets
If you’re thinking about spread betting on a forex pair such as NZDUSD then, looking at a site like IG, at the time of writing you would see a price of $0.85425 – $0.85445.

As a result, you can speculate on NZDUSD to go higher than $0.85445 or to go lower than $0.85425.

If you are spread betting, you speculate on every unit the market increases or decreases; for the NZDUSD market a unit is $0.00010 of the forex rate’s price movement.

With this example, let’s say you decide to stake £3 for every $0.00010 NZDUSD increases or decreases.

Speculating on the Market to Increase

If you were to buy NZDUSD at $0.85445 and the forex rate rose then the spread might change to $0.85830 – $0.85850. If that happened, you might decide to close your position at $0.85830.

Profits (or Losses) = (closing price of the market – initial price of the market) x stake per $0.00010
Profits (or Losses) = ($0.85830 – $0.85445) x £3 per $0.00010 stake
Profits (or Losses) = $0.00385 x £3 per $0.00010
Profits (or Losses) = £115.50 profit

Nevertheless, if the forex rate had decreased to, as an example, $0.85018 – $0.85038, you could choose to close your trade to limit your losses. Assuming this was the case, you’d sell the market at $0.85018.

You would close your bet with the same £3 per $0.00010 stake:

Profits (or Losses) = (closing price of the market – initial price of the market) x stake per $0.00010
Profits (or Losses) = ($0.85018 – $0.85445) x £3 per $0.00010 stake
Profits (or Losses) = -$0.00427 x £3 per $0.00010
Profits (or Losses) = -£128.10 loss

Speculating on the Market to Decrease

One of the many benefits of spread betting is that you can short sell the markets, i.e. speculate on the markets to decrease.

The original market was $0.85425 – $0.85445.

If you shorted NZDUSD at $0.85425 and the forex rate fell then the quote could change to $0.84944 – $0.84964. In that case, you could close your position at $0.84964.

Profits (or Losses) = (initial price of the market – closing price of the market) x stake per $0.00010
Profits (or Losses) = ($0.85425 – $0.84964) x £3 per $0.00010 stake
Profits (or Losses) = $0.00461 x £3 per $0.00010
Profits (or Losses) = £138.30 profit

On the other hand, if the forex rate were to rise to, as an example, $0.85918 – $0.85938, you might decide to close your bet to prevent further losses. If so, you would buy at $0.85938.

So, with the same £3 per $0.00010 stake:

Profits (or Losses) = (initial price of the market – closing price of the market) x stake per $0.00010
Profits (or Losses) = ($0.85425 – $0.85938) x £3 per $0.00010 stake
Profits (or Losses) = -$0.00513 x £3 per $0.00010
Profits (or Losses) = -£153.90 loss
