Typical spread betting chart:

USD vs CAD Spread Bets - Example Chart

USDCAD Spread Betting Example

USD vs CAD Spread Bets
If you are interested in financial spread betting on a forex rate like GBPUSD then, on visiting a trading platform like CMC Markets, you would currently find a quote of $1.69710 – $1.69728.

If you’re interested in spread betting on a forex pair such as USDCAD then, on visiting a company like Financial Spreads, you would currently find a price of C$1.07630 – C$1.07656.

As a result, you can speculate on USDCAD to go above C$1.07656 or go below C$1.07630.

When placing a spread bet, investors trade on every unit the market moves up or down; for the USDCAD market a unit is C$0.00010 of the currency pair’s price movement.

So let’s say you want to stake £3 for every C$0.00010 USDCAD moves up or down.

Speculating on the Market to Go Up

If you were to buy USDCAD at C$1.07656 and the currency pair rose then you might see the price move to C$1.08060 – C$1.08086. If this were the case, you could close your position by selling at C$1.08060.

Profit/Loss = (closing value of the market – initial value of the market) x stake per C$0.00010
Profit/Loss = (C$1.08060 – C$1.07656) x £3 per C$0.00010 stake
Profit/Loss = C$0.00404 x £3 per C$0.00010
Profit/Loss = £121.20 profit

Conversely, if the currency pair had fallen to C$1.07198 – C$1.07224, you might decide to close your bet to limit your losses. Therefore, you’d sell at C$1.07198.

You would close your bet with the same £3 per C$0.00010 stake:

Profit/Loss = (closing value of the market – initial value of the market) x stake per C$0.00010
Profit/Loss = (C$1.07198 – C$1.07656) x £3 per C$0.00010 stake
Profit/Loss = -C$0.00458 x £3 per C$0.00010
Profit/Loss = -£137.40 loss

Speculating on the Market to Go Down

A key advantage of spread betting is that you can go short of the markets, i.e. speculate on the markets to decrease.

This example was originally priced at C$1.07630 – C$1.07656.

If you were to sell USDCAD at C$1.07630 and the currency pair went down then the quote could change to C$1.07241 – C$1.07267. If that happened, you might decide to close your position at C$1.07267.

Profit/Loss = (initial value of the market – closing value of the market) x stake per C$0.00010
Profit/Loss = (C$1.07630 – C$1.07267) x £3 per C$0.00010 stake
Profit/Loss = C$0.00363 x £3 per C$0.00010
Profit/Loss = £108.90 profit

Markets do of course rise, if the currency pair had moved up to, as an example, C$1.08016 – C$1.08042, you could close your position to prevent further losses. In that case, you would buy back at C$1.08042.

You would do this with the same £3 per C$0.00010 stake:

Profit/Loss = (initial value of the market – closing value of the market) x stake per C$0.00010
Profit/Loss = (C$1.07630 – C$1.08042) x £3 per C$0.00010 stake
Profit/Loss = -C$0.00412 x £3 per C$0.00010
Profit/Loss = -£123.60 loss
